The class will introduce students to energy technologies, with specific regards to markets and policy. The objective of the course is to provide the economist’s perspective on a broad range of topics that professionals in the energy industry will encounter.
Environmentalism and Ecocriticism—The Cultural History of Trees, A Hands-on Learning Project Wood has been the most important material in the history of human technological practices, yet today it seems to have been reduced to crooked 2x4s sold at the local home center. This seminar will examine trees and lumber as they function in human technological practices and in our culture. We will study how trees figure in current debates about the environment, including tree structure and forest composition, trees and the law, and arguments about plant intelligence.
This course is focused on providing students opportunities to develop and reinforce tools and techniques to successfully become employed and maintain employment. Through this course, students will engage in internship opportunities on and off-campus that align with their career interests. Partnerships are created with university departments and independent organizations to facilitate the learning objectives and foster an inclusive learning environment. Class participants will learn the benefits of work, both for themselves and their contribution to society and the business community.
In the past decade Atlanta has undergone phenomenal changes in infrastructure, and food culture because of two things: being a beta-hub in the tech industry, and tax credits that have cultivated a thriving film industry. This influx of people, money, and innovation, restaurant culture has seen tremendous growth. This Serve-Learn-Sustain (SLS) course encourages students to learn the story of Atlanta through its food history.
Globalization in the Modern Era (HTS 3055) will examine the social, political and economic bases for the phenomenon frequently referred to as "globalization." The course will discuss competing theories regarding the rise of globalization, as well as the divergent consequences that this process has left in its wake in different communities around the world. While social, economic, political and environmental inequalities are built into some aspects of globalization, the phenomenon also offers new opportunities and alternatives for development and for resistance.
The course will move students through the design and construction of a single-family home. We'll work within the constraints a local non-profit developer. The process will move from the due diligence of lot selection and determining the best use for a lot within the guidelines of an organization moving renters to home ownership. Once a legal footprint is established, a home will be designed to include plans, elevations, structural components, and a sustainability plan based on EarthCraft certification. Project presentations will be delivered to the executive team of the non-profit.
Understanding cities, the largest and most complex artifacts in human history, is essential as we face the challenges of building a sustainable future. This course is taught from historical vantage points across the globe, recognizing that urban form is shaped by many influences - ecological, technological, cultural, political and economic.
The laboratory portion of this course focuses on foundational principles and essential techniques of chemistry. These conceptual and technical tools have great relevance to many issues of importance to society, including climate change, human health, economic security, and more. SLS-related experiments in CHEM 1211K will be related to five threads of sustainability in chemistry: Green Chemistry, Chemistry and Society, Everyday Chemical Analysis, Computational Chemistry, and Climate Change.
