This class is designed to familiarize students with the fundamental principles of earth science and how these principles relate to “real world” problems and applied science. The interrelationships between plate tectonics, rock and mineral types, geologic structures and hazards, and natural resources such as ground and surface water are emphasized. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: (1) Predict and develop mitigation strategies that relate to applied earth science, (2) Construct 3 dimensional maps of the Earth, (3) Interpret the geologic history of an area, (4) Explain how plate tectonic setting influences rock types and expected geologic hazards.
