Special Topics: Arduino Prototyping

The course provides a hands on introduction to hardware prototyping with the Arduino platform. Arduinos are useful microcontrollers that support easy access to external sensors, motors, lights, or other components. The class covers the use of tools, various sensors and actuators, as well as an introduction to the programming of Arduinos. Some coding knowledge is beneficial, but the course itself does not require prior programming experience. The class will not provide an in-depth technological breakdown to cover e.g.

Vertically Integrated Project: GaTech4Wildlife

Currently the course works with international leaders in different species conservation and protection. Member of the class work directly with leaders in the field of species conservation focused on their study species and those who work with them. For example we are working on an on campus fox rabies vaccination biscuit distribution system and working with behavior biologists, and facilities managers of the area where foxes were found.

Climate and Global Change

Climate change is among the greatest challenges facing humanity today. The course breaks down the scientific underpinnings of how increasing atmospheric greenhouse gases affect the global climate. By looking at the problem of climate change from multiple angles, students get a decent view of how a modern climate scientist works. The course also addresses the impacts of climate change and discusses the pros and cons of potential solutions.

Happiness

This course introduces students to the study and pursuit of happiness, integrating research findings from numerous disciplines including psychology, sociology, and economics. In addition to being a scientific topic, happiness is central to political philosophy, ethics, religion, and philosophy. Thus, happiness research has the potential to help everyone flourish by integrating and uniting human beings through social, political, and individual ideals.

Air Pollution Control Engineering

The course is designed to introduce students to fundamental principles needed to address air pollution engineering. Upon completion of this course, the student should have knowledge of the air pollutants of most concern, their source and control, their atmospheric transport and fate, and policies developed to help manage the problem. The course will involve use of publicly available data from the EPA to explore air quality and emissions trends in Atlanta and the state of Georgia.

Biorefining

Biomass is the only renewable source of organic carbon. Many efforts have been made in recent year to develop economically viable processes for converting biomass into novel products like fuels, chemicals, and materials. Examples of products include ethanol and alkanes as biofuels, bulk chemicals like ethylene glycol and phenol, and composite materials containing biomass-derived fibers. However, the complexity of the feedstock and required process conditions have presented significant challenges for many applications.

Chemical Product Design

This course provides a product design algorithm that can facilitate design and development of new or improved products. The design process emphasizes the concepts of sustainability, and discusses the impact of products, specifically chemical products on the community. Product design is discussed from the social, cultural and environmental perspectives, whereby the need for technology development for the social good becomes key.

Pre-Senior Design

Senior Design is a mentored experience in which students begin the transition from school to engineering practice. In Senior Design, students must learn to apply the theories, methods, and tools they learn in the classroom to situations that are complex, where data are not given, and where the assumptions required by formal analyses may be violated. Therefore, Senior Design is more than a course. It is an opportunity for students to work with a client, team members, and faculty to accomplish something truly meaningful.
