Nick Sturm
ENGL 1102
Spring 2020

This course will utilize the materials collected in the Ivan Allen Digital Archive to explore the history of Atlanta in the 1960s through the lens of Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr.’s administration (1962-70). The Ivan Allen Digital Archive is a digital archive hosted by Georgia Tech that contains documents related to Allen’s mayoral tenure including a range of important material related to civil rights, systemic racism and discrimination, housing policy, mass transit, urban pollution, the construction of Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, and the beginning of Atlanta’s professional sports teams. Along with research-based field work and a class visit to an urban farm on the BeltLine Westside Trail, students will create public-facing multimodal research projects that generate revised narratives about equity, sustainability, and marginalized voices in the history of our city. Exploring Atlanta in the past invests students in creating a sustainable and socially just Atlanta today and in the future.
