SLS Internship Program

Feedback from our Partners

“The Center for Sustainable Communities is extremely grateful for the opportunity to participate in the SLS Internship Program. We had an exceptional experience with our assigned intern and the overall process.  This despite setting an ambitious goal for our intern of moving a major and complicated project from one phase to the next,  and also assigning the task of helping to plan and execute a highly visible and complex event.  In fact, we are pleased to still sustain a fruitful and interactive relationship with our intern resulting in her receiving a  post assignment job and research oppty as well as an competitive international summer position.” –Garry Harris

“I would highly recommend GA Tech’s SLS program and its interns.  Our intern provided valuable assistance and information, and critical community engagement components, which led to successful program growth.  As our organization partners with many of the other SLS intern recipients, I have been able to see first-hand the wonderful results of many of the interns.  You can’t go wrong with this program and the students.  Can I say, I just love it!” - Jill Arrington, Groundwork Atlanta

Internship Program Overview

SLS seeks to provide our partners with support and resources, while providing our students with practical experience in supporting solutions for sustainable communities. The SLS internship program is offered every summer and is an opportunity for students looking to gain real-world experience related to sustainability and community engagement.   Summer interns will earn internship course audit credit., and can choose between a part-time (15-20 hours per week) or full-time (30-40 hours per week) internship.  Students interested in a part-time internship for the fall or spring semesters can contact SLS and we will work with them to identify partners who may be interested in hosting an intern during the school year.

Innovating for Social Impact

Students participating in the SLS Internship must enroll in an internship seminar with SLS Director Jennifer Hirsch; the seminar meets one evening every other week for two hours. The seminar serves to a) introduce students to theories of grassroots sustainability innovation, and b) provide students with an opportunity to reflect on their internship experiences. (NOTE: One semester of the SLS Internship Program, combined with the internship seminar, fulfills the ENGAGE requirement of the SLS Innovating for Social Impact Program.)

Stipends

SLS Summer Interns will receive a Living Stipend of $2500 for a part-time internship and $5000 for a full-time internship, paid in two increments over the summer.  Because SLS internships provide course audit credit for our students, the internship is considered unpaid (i.e. interns will not receive a salary).
